Bruce Nolan did a nice job explaining why Mardi Gras falls when it does in his article "Lunar calendar throws Mardi Gras date for a loop each year."
Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the first day of spring, and this year is a late Mardi Gras. Nolan did the math, explaining that Fat Tuesday can occur as early as Feb. 3 and as late as March 9. The next time we'll have a Mardi Gras this late will be in 2038.
2038 or in the Chinese system, the year 4736, is a Year of the Horse.
